Kabul, August 2006: Nervous excitement fills the rooms at the state broadcaster. Among those present are German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his Afghan counterpart, Rangin Dadfar Spanta.
They
are there to launch the new international news show of Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA), capping a 36-month DW-AKADEMIE project.
For three years, experts from DW-AKADEMIE supported and encouraged the creation of an international news department. Afghan colleagues were trained, broadcast technology was modernized, and countless test broadcasts were produced. After decades of war, an international news show produced solely in Afghanistan is once again being broadcast.
A show produced by Afghans for Afghans.
The show is broadcast nationwide in the two official languages, Dari and Pashto, and replaces the news program that was previously produced for Afghanistan by DW-TV in Berlin.
