Before the eyes of a shocked world, the East German state erected the stark Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961, effectively dividing Berlin. The Iron Curtain had been drawn.
The Berlin Wall - or Iron Curtain, as it came to be known - embodied the ideological conflicts and military tension between the Soviet Union and the West following World War Two. In Berlin, the Wall not only split up German families, it also caused profound grief over the years as many East Germans died trying to flee their repressive state to the west. The Wall saw the height of the Cold War era before it fell in a peaceful East German revolution after 28 years, in 1989.
